Human Design: Manifestors, Reflectors, and Manifesting Generators by Caroline Coleman

There’s a lot going on in the Human Design Chart, but the foundation is your aura type. There are 5 types: Generators, Manifesting Generators (technically a sub-type of Generators), Projectors, Manifestors, and Reflectors. Each aura type’s energy works differently in the world.

Human Design is a system that combines many other systems, including Astrology and the I’Ching. Like Astrology, you can get a Human Design chart by inputting your birth details into a site such as mybodygraph.com. There’s a lot going on in the Human Design Chart, but the foundation is your aura type. There are 5 types: Generators, Manifesting Generators (technically a sub-type of Generators), Projectors, Manifestors, and Reflectors. Each aura type’s energy works differently in the world.

Manifestors

Manifestors are fascinating to watch.

The Manifestor energy is the one that everyone is always told to embody in our society: “Just go for it! Make it happen! Initiate!”

But, doing so leads to frustration for Generators and MGs, bitterness for Projectors, and disappointment for Reflectors. But for Manifestors? Initiating is EXACTLY what they’re supposed to do! In fact, not being able to follow this strategy leads to anger. The trick for making this run more smoothly for Manifestors- so you’re not constantly leaving others in your dust (“Follow the Manifestor” is a game that starts as soon as they can walk)- is to inform the other. Sounds simple enough, but it’s one of those things that can be simple, but not easy, and require a little practice, due to the various conditioning we receive. For example, let’s say you’re at the grocery store with your partner. You’re in the produce section together, but suddenly you remember something in the baking section you need. Instead of just peacing out and heading to the baking department, inform your partner. “I need to go grab something in the baking department.” You don’t have to ask them if they want to come too, or what they think about it, or anything else, although of course, it might be nice to ask. Just let them know, so then they can decide for themselves if they’d like to go over with you, or meet you over there when they’re done getting the produce. Manifestors are all about transmitting and receiving neutral data, versus telling or being told what to do.

Accordingly, Manifestors respond best to being told neutral information as well. When interacting with Manifestors, one can get so much further when instead of telling them what to do, you just give them some neutral information. “It’s cold outside” or “would you like to put on your coat?” may yield better results from a child Manifestor versus “make sure you put on a jacket!” The difference is so slight, even nonexistent to other energy types, but it’s everything for Manifestors. A note about Manifestor children: teaching them to ask before they do something is the kid-version of informing.

The Manifestor aura is repelling. This can have negative connotations, but it isn’t bad at all – think of it as protective. Manifestors are here to initiate and lead. They can get urges to begin something, but don’t have the energy to see everything to completion (that’s what Generators are for!), and that’s completely okay, and how the energy operates. Rest is important for Manifestors since they don’t have consistent access to energy. A lot of Manifestor conditioning lies around feeling anger at always being told what to do, feeling controlled, and being told they can’t do the things they want to do. Play around with informing those around you before you do something and see if an inner feeling of peace- the Manifestor signature- arises.

Reflectors

Reflectors are very rare, the rarest of the types. Due to this, they work in a very unique way than the other types.

Reflectors are Lunar Beings, and as such, they change with the day, just like the Moon. Their auras reflect, like a mirror, and because of this others may project onto them.

Reflectors have a lot of wisdom, and the state of an environment can be measured by the health of a reflector since they’re so open and sensitive to their surroundings (and this is a gift). Paradoxically, their auras are protective to them, despite this openness.

Reflectors actually take on the transits of the day since their designs are so open, so their energy levels can fluctuate a lot over the course of a month- this is totally normal. For Reflectors, when faced with a big decision, it’s wise for them to actually wait a full lunar cycle- about 28.5 days. This allows them to fully immerse and see how the decision feels through every changing day of the month. This can seem so impractical, but it allows them to really FEEL it, “try it on” throughout different changing energies, and see if it still feels good throughout all those different energies. The cool thing is that the Reflector signature- the way they feel when they’re in flow- is surprise. So when they can release the conditioning to act immediately and force things, they get surprised with something even better. They’re inclined to feel disappointed when they don’t “try on” the big decisions through waiting a lunar cycle. Basically, it’s about easing into things and letting go of how you think things “should” be.

While Human Design is about living authentically for everyone, it’s a little extra true for Reflectors, because they’re so rare. The way Reflectors exist and operate in the world is just going to be different than most other people. And that’s a very good thing! Reflectors have a special place in society. If you’re a Reflector, embrace your uniqueness and your own process. You’re not built like everyone else energetically, and because of this, you’re going to move through the world differently, in a way that’s just right for you.

Manifesting Generators (MG)

MGs are a subtype of Generators. (Human Design: Generators) While they are all about responding to the world around them like Generators, things happen on a faster timeline for MGs.

Their aura is magnetic, warm, and enveloping like the Generator aura.

They have the Manifestor ability to initiate once they’ve responded positively to something and make things happen. They have a ton of energy, but like Generators, need to make sure they “spend” it wisely, on the things that light them up from within. Human Design is all about tuning into your body and not acting from the chatter and conditioning of the mind. MGs have a reputation for being able to do a bunch of different things at once and can be the quintessential multi-hyphenate.

Another way MGs differ from Generators is that they can skip steps. Generators build amazing things, one step at a time, over time. Meanwhile, MGs can skip some steps and still be successful. Just be sure to not be in such a rush that you skip too many steps, or skip the wrong step, and have to backtrack- super frustrating, which is the not-self, and a clue that you need to calibrate. It doesn’t always have to be full steam ahead: remember to slow down and let life come to you, so you can respond and see what feels good. It’s important for MGs to know that it’s okay to switch gears and pursue new things, and to let go of things that are no longer working. “Quitting” may be a dirty word to them, but it’s really okay to stop doing things that no longer resonate. Just inform any pertinent people so they’re not left wondering where you went!

If you feel called to, you can experiment with your strategy and notice how you feel and what comes up. The strategies can feel a bit foreign at first because they go against so much of how we think we should act in the world, and be as people. If you start experimenting, it’s important to be gentle with yourself, and remember that it’s a process and not something that happens overnight. Next, we’ll dive into what are called the Authorities, which help you tune back into your body when making decisions, instead of solely relying on your mind and its chatter.
